Obituary

Wilfred J. Maheu, 83, of Canaan, passed away on Monday December 9, 2013 after a brief illness. He was born February 5, 1930 in Waterville, Maine, the son of Walter J. Maheu and Nora Estes Maheu. He graduated from Waterville High School in 1948. After high school, he joined the Army and was trained as a heavy equipment and tank mechanic, stationed in Germany. After his tour of duty, he tried several different careers and eventually became a dairy farmer for the next 30 years in Canaan, Maine. In 1980, he and his wife Evelyn sold the homestead and opened Maheu’s Garage; his passion for many years. Soon after the garage opening, he saw an opportunity in Canaan to start a mobile home park. He started the park in 1983 and was very proud of this accomplishment. Wilfred never stopped working; he loved being at the garage every day!!! Wilfred will be greatly missed for his generosity, knowledge, friendship and his strong work ethic. Survivors besides his wife of 52 years, Evelyn Eastman Maheu of Canaan, are his two sons; Walter J. Maheu and his wife Nina, Ronald DiBiase and his wife Jennifer, his daughter Susan DiBiase and her partner Ann, all of Canaan, two grandsons; Harrison Maheu and Erik A Maheu both of Canaan, one great-grandson; Arthur J. Maheu. He also leaves many step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews whom he loved. Wilfred is predeceased by his parents, Walter J. Maheu and Nora Estes Maheu; two sisters Yvette and Juliette and his step-daughter Linda DiBiase. At his request there will be no funeral service held, at a later date there will be a celebration of his life held. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, Maine. Donations may be made in Wilfred’s memory to the American Cancer Society, 1 Bowdoin Mill Island, Suite 300, Topsham, Maine 04086-1240 or to a charity of one’s choice.
