thens - Rowena A. (Prouty) Gilman, 77, passed away peacefully at Tissues Country Estates in Athens on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27th, 2024. She had spent her last few days enjoying time spent visiting with all her loved ones.
Rowena was born in Skowhegan on August 16, 1946, the daughter of Robert and Eleanor (Williams) Prouty. She was the elder twin of her and her brother, Ronnie. She attended schools in Cornville and Athens, graduating from the Somerset Academy in 1965.
Rowena married her high school sweetheart, Ronald Gilman, on February 5, 1966. This was also Ronnie's Birthday, and it became an inside joke that he could not ever forget their Anniversary, and he NEVER did! Together they raised three children in Athens and were the best example of perfect parents.
Rowena was well known in her teen years for babysitting many of the local area children, who she proudly watched grow up over the years to be successful adults. In her early working years, she was employed at several different factories, including Norwock Shoe Co., and DeLong Sportswear. She then became a CNA, working at Cedar Ridge Nursing Center for many years. Rowena graduated from Cosmetology School in 1994 and was a Beautician at both Cedar Ridge Nursing Center and Tissues Country Estates. In her later years, she worked at Tissues Country Estates in many distinct roles - Beautician, Housekeeping, Dietary, and Aide Work.
Her final home for her last few weeks of life were spent at Tissues Country Estates, the place where she spent a good portion of her life dedicated to taking care of others. She was loved and respected by all who happened to cross her path, whether she was a co-worker, an old or new friend, or just an acquaintance. She loved to help everyone, and often gave to anyone in need, whether she knew them or not.
She was predeceased by her parents Robert and Eleanor (Williams) Prouty; husband Ronald Gilman; great-grandson Brady Burge; brother Elwood Prouty; and brothers-in-law Gareth Gilman and William Cohn.
She is survived by her three children, son Mike, daughters Missy with son-in-law Jamie and Melanie; four grandchildren, Chelsea (Brandon) Burge, Emily Manter, Olivia, and Liam; sister Sandra (Ken Ketchum) White; twin brother Ronnie Prouty; and step-sister Claudine (Don) Lowe; sisters-in-law Rhonda Cohn, Gloria Gilman, and Linda Prouty; a very special boy "Baby G"; special friends Alan and Sherry Cress; many nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, and co-workers.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital in memory of Rowena's Great Grandson - Brady Burge. Maine Medical Center - Philanthropy Department, 22 Bramhall Street, Portland, Maine 04102. 207-662-2669
Graveside services will be held at the Mount Rest Cemetery in Athens, on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at 1:00pm.
The family would like to thank the Staff at Tissues Country Estates for the wonderful care and love they provided our mother in her final days and weeks.
