Rome - Robert Edward Hudson, 64, wonderful and beloved husband, brother, son, stepfather, friend, and Selectman in the town of Rome, Maine, died Sunday, April 28, 2024. He had suffered with late-stage melanoma for five months, dealing with it his own way, with clarity and grace. He died as peacefully as anyone could hope to pass, bearing up until the very end when he took a nap, slipped his craft quietly off the dock and sailed away.
Bob was always ready to joke with others and set them at ease with the lighthearted way he looked at life. He had a knack for finding joy in every day, and he made the most of his time. He had profound irreverence for the absurdities of life and was attentive and sensitive to the plights of the downtrodden.
His gifts were many, his accomplishments, extensive: home builder, carpenter, boatyard manager, home and property restorer, boat builder, farmer, beekeeper, sailor, sea captain, machinist, maintenance manager (for hospitals, resorts, and air separation plants), fireman, hunter, and artist.
Bob sailed with his wife and partner of 14 years, Laurie Dobson, from Maine to the Caribbean and back on their sailboat "Calypso." He fixed yachts and co-captained their boat "Eagle Aye" in the St. Thomas Sea Scout program, teaching sailing to many scouts. He was alive aboard his "twin screws" boat the "Wet Dream". Bob travelled the globe in the Navy as a machinist mate, from 77-83, aboard the USS Enterprise and the Richard L. Page.
Bob was an accomplished cook. He could fix anything and knew all the trades. He was sought after for his handyman skills but was unpretentious about his abilities and never sought self-glorification.
Bob was a true man of the people. If you needed something, he was there. He lived in many places, was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, and was raised in Plaistow, NH with his parents and 3 older sisters, whom he loved dearly.
Bob was born on June 3, 1959. In his short but rewarding life, he focused on what really matters. He loved his bees, geese, chickens, dachshunds, and family of humans, and was an honest and brave soul, making the most of his life. He gave his all.
Bob mustered to fortitude to get married a little over a month before he died. He and Laurie (Hudson) legally sealed their 14 year "common law marriage" on March 21st, 2024, in the Rome Town Hall.
Bob's stepchildren and wife are comforted knowing he made peace with the world. He lived and loved fully from his heart; he enriched and touched the lives of many and left behind an example to live up to.
