Obituary

Phyllis Barstow, 97, of Norridgewock, passed away Wednesday November 26, 2014 in Skowhegan, Maine. Phyllis was a recent recipient of the Boston Post Cane. She was born April 14, 1917 in Dexter, Maine, the daughter of Philip E. and Florence (Parker) Barstow. Phyllis graduated from Edward Little High School in the class of 1935 and then attended the Farmington State Teachers College graduating in 1938. She spent most of her career teaching in Lewiston and was later employed with the Department of Human Services in Skowhegan. She was a past member of the Sunset Chapter of the OES in Skowhegan, a member of the Norridgewock Village Improvement Society, Norridgewock Historical Society, Extension Homemaker, and the Skowhegan Women’s Club. She also served on the Norridgewock Library Board for many years. Phyllis was a very independent woman who took care of herself, her family, her friends and her community. The Town of Norridgewock dedicated the Town Report to Phyllis in 1999. She is survived by her nieces; Brenda Obert and her husband David of Norridgewock, Linda Fox and her husband John of Richardson, Texas, Beth Luce and her husband Norman of Starks, her nephew Horace Barstow and his wife Barbara of Norridgewock, Mary Brown and her husband Weldon of Madison, Linda Griffin and her husband Paul of The Forks, and Tammy Locke and her husband Allen of Skowhegan and many grand-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her two brothers; Richard Barstow and Parker Jewett, her sister Joy Washburn, her grand-nephew Linwood Washburn. A graveside service will be held in the summer at the Southside Cemetery in Skowhegan. The family would like to thank the staff of the Cedar Ridge Center for the wonderful care Phyllis received. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, Maine.
