Obituary

Skowhegan - Philias (Phil) Joseph Johnson, 96, a longtime resident of Cedar Ridge Nursing Home, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 30, 2023, with his family by his side. Phil was born in Madison, Maine on April 7, 1927. He was the son of the late Cyprien Johnson and Domitile Poirier. Phil was predeceased by his wife of 74 years, Bessie, the love of his life. He was also predeceased by brothers Joseph (Jill) Johnson and Leonard (Ned) Johnson, sister Evelyn Veilleux, and son-in-law Richard (Dickie) Clement. Phil joined the Navy New Year's Day 1945 and was honorably discharged as a Seaman, First Class in 1946. His last duty ship was the USS Consolation. Phil was awarded the WW2 Victory medal, the American Area medal, and the Asiatic Pacific medal. Phil was an extremely hard-working man, who had many jobs over the years. He enjoyed his family, spending summers at OOB and horseshoes. He spent many hours practicing horseshoes with his brothers and sons and participated in numerous tournaments winning in all classes from A-F. Phil leaves behind his two sisters, Clara Gilbert (100), Shirley McDonald and husband Micky, brother Charlie and wife Judy, and his 3 children, Barbara Clement of Norridgewock, Cyp Johnson and his wife Cindy of Madison, and Ned Johnson and his wife Michele of Windham. He also leaves behind 5 grandchildren, Robin Clement and friend Bruce Ruzzoli of Norridgewock, Corey Johnson and wife Staci of Skowhegan, Jason Johnson of Mexico City, Ryan Clement of Norridgewock, and Lisa Johnson of New York City, and 4 great grandchildren, Dominic & Daxton Godino and Caleb & Sarah Johnson. A graveside service will be held at 10:00am on October 19, 2023, at the Calvary Cemetery in Skowhegan.
