Obituary

Nancy Louise Olds Fitts, 95 years old, passed away peacefully at Beside Manor in Oakland, Maine April 16, 2023. Nancy was born in Madison, Wisconsin on August 26, 1927. Her parents were Lillian (Netzow) Olds of Milwaukee and William Olds of Madison. She and her family moved several times during the great depression with stints in Washington, Wisconsin, and Illinois, where she finished high school. After high school she attended the University of Minnesota and graduated with a degree in architecture. She had many friends in the Alpha Phi sorority at the university. While at the university, she met her husband Richard, who also attended U. Minnesota. After he returned from service in the Pacific, they were married in 1948. Their family bloomed rapidly, with all four of their children in their Minneapolis home by 1953. In the early 1960s, they moved west of Minneapolis to Excelsior, near Lake Minnetonka. Both Nancy and her husband grew up loving to sail on inland lakes and they spent many weekends racing together on Lake Minnetonka. They shared this passion with their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren! In her 40s, she returned to the university to earn a degree in math education and became a high school math teacher. Nancy's 'take charge' personality was driven by her curiosity and her love of adventure. She was a leader and a great organizer. She and Richard were active members of Trinity Episcopal Church in Excelsior where she studied theology, helped with the altar guild, made needlepoint kneelers, and provided architectural designs for an expansion. She loved birding, reading, cross-country skiing, knitting, gardening, hiking, and anything outdoors. She was an adventurous cook and served up many a family feast. She shared and passed on these interests with her children and grandchildren. She and Richard moved from Minnesota to Granite Hill Estates in Maine in 2007, where they enjoyed many happy and active years. After Richard's death she moved into Granite Hill Assisted Living, and as her health declined, to Bedside Manor in Oakland. She accepted her physical limitations and burdens with the help of God's grace and was thoughtful and grateful to family, friends, and staff for their care and companionship. We feel so blessed that she kept a positive attitude and shared her love throughout this difficult phase. Nancy was predeceased by her husband Richard and her brother William, and is survived by her children Deborah Kaufmann (and Jeffrey) of Camden ME, Dana Fitts (and Linda) of Excelsior MN, Cynthia Hesson (and Ted) of Harpswell ME, and Charles Fitts (and Claire) of Scarborough ME. She is also survived by her twelve grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for 2pm on Saturday May 20th at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 43 Foreside Rd, Falmouth, Maine. A reception at the church hall will follow the service. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Bedside Manor for their generous and loving care for mom. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Nancy could be made to Bedside Manor, PO Box 603, Oakland Maine 04963.
