Fairfield - With heavy hearts, the family of Nancy Carol (Otis) DeRaps announces her passing on April 6, 2024, at home peacefully, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on January 7, 1941, the beloved daughter of the late Raymond and Maitland (Basford) Otis.
Nancy grew up in Fairfield with her 3 devoted brothers Raymond, Gordon, and Jimmy. She often spoke of her childhood memories, which included her best childhood friend, Ann. Many of the adventures with the family included Ann. A Sunday trip with the family to Reid State Park was one of her favorite outings. Nancy fondly recalled the return home from the journey when her father would buy a tub of vanilla ice cream (her absolute favorite) and tell the kids they could have all they wanted. The joyful smile and laughter when reminiscing of her past adventures will remain in our hearts forever.
Competitive, oh so slightly, she had to be, growing up with three brothers. Nancy played softball and basketball and loved to dance. She absolutely loved music and instilled that love into her family. Music was often playing in the house, especially Saturday mornings when chores were completed before playing games, which she loved. She was the Yahtzee guru with a flair for gambling. She was an active grandmother, showing up to support the next generations whom she loved very much. This helped keep her young and vibrant. Everyone that met her loved her, she touched many lives with her service, kindness, career, friendship, sisterhood and above all, motherhood. She was the matriarch of our family, we will remember all she taught us, selflessly, in her honor through eternity.
She attended KVCC later in life, fulfilling a lifelong dream of going to college and pursuing a career in mental health. She was an active member of The First Baptist church in Fairfield where she served as the Sunday school teacher while raising her family. She loved to travel and resided between Maine and Virginia. Her travels included visits abroad to Japan and Italy while Matthew was stationed overseas while serving in the Navy. The smile, and the twinkle in her eyes when she spoke of her adventures was something to behold.
She was predeceased by her brother James " Jimmy" Otis whom she believed she would see again when God was ready. She lived a life full of love, laughter, and joy. She always enjoyed the simple things, star gazing on the back porch, giggling in the night, a trip to Governors with family, or The Purple Cow with Julie. She loved tulips and all yellow flowers as they made her smile. She will be missed dearly; we will hold her in our hearts as we take comfort knowing she is in the arms of the lord and reunited with those that have gone before her.
Nancy is survived by brothers Raymond Otis and his wife Carmen, and Gordon Otis and his wife Janet, her five children Stephen and Susan (DeRaps) Lennon, Michael and Tammy DeRaps, Scott and Lisa (DeRaps) Ballard, John and Jessica DeRaps, Matthew and Amy DeRaps.
