Obituary

Mark Christian Ancker of Industry, breathed his final breath on Tuesday the 13th of May 2025, seated in his favorite spot, in his beloved home known as Simple Pleasures, surrounded by his neat stuff, knowing that he was deeply loved. Mark was born in Philadelphia on the 23rd of August 1947. He grew up in Bristol PA, the second of three sons of Henry Edward II and Jane (Chapin) Ancker. When Mark received his draft notice, he opted to enlist in the Navy rather than serving as an Army draftee. While in the Navy he visited Norway, where he fell in love with the country and the magnificent statuary of Gustav Vigeland at Frogner Park in Oslo. Half a century later, Mark was thrilled to be able to return to Norway to share the experience of that magical place with his daughter Marsya and son Avery. 1969 was an auspicious year for Mark. He left the Navy, married Doreen Morin, became father to Marsya Louise Ancker, and went to Woodstock. In 1975, he and his young family settled in Bethel, Maine. They moved into the "gingerbread" house facing the Bethel Commons where they had rich social life at the heart of the town's hippie community. After Mark & Doreen divorced, Mark studied psychology at UMF, earning his Bachelor's degree and a place in the Honor Society. He was elected by his peers to be the graduation speaker for his class and arranged for one of his heroes, Buckminster Fuller, to give the commencement address. Mark craved a piece of dirt of his own, and his heart sang when he was finally able to buy the twenty-four acres in Industry that became Simple Pleasures. He loved walking there, where he named favorite trees, cleared pathways through the magic woods, kept an eye on his herd of pink lady slippers, oversaw the beavers building dams, and wove play areas from old fire hoses and standing trees. In 1989 he married Deborah Chadbourne, and they moved onto the property. While building the main house, they inhabited a makeshift structure without running water, electricity, or phone, which Mark forever lovingly called "The Shack." They chose to share the surname Lovewell but resumed their original surnames after they ended their marriage. Mark completed his fanciful post and beam home at Simple Pleasures largely on his own, with the help of his many friends. It incorporated many gifted or salvaged materials, including the skylight on the tower where he loved to look out over his land and hang out with his friends. He lived off-grid for years and got a phone line only after an injury forced him to crawl out to the road to flag down a ride to the hospital. Mark was rejuvenated in 2001 when he and Angela Thompson welcomed Avery Christian Edward Ancker into the world. Mark delighted in spending time with Avery, riding the Narrow Gauge rails, and having adventures. One of Mark's most cherished memories was when he and Avery went to see the Blue Man Group. His favorite hat still bares a faint blue handprint from when one of the group placed their hand on his head. He was a very proud and loving father to both of his children. Mark lived an audacious life and followed his own set of rules. He loved art, books, music, nature, nakedness, playing acey deucey, and people. He shaped the lives of many and was proud of mentoring and encouraging young people. He had many loves. Mark is survived by daughter Marsya Louise Ancker Robert and her husband Paul Robert, son Avery Christian Edward Ancker and Avery's girlfriend Kaitie Higgins, brother Jon Ancker, and many loving friends. He was predeceased by his parents and older brother Henry.
