Obituary

Louis B. Turner of Skowhegan, Maine, passed away on December 30, 2025, at Oak Grove Center in Waterville. Louis was born on October 13, 1925, in Salem, New Hampshire, to Glenwood and June Turner. In 1926, the family moved to Presque Isle, Maine, where he and his siblings were raised. Although he never finished high school, Louis joined the U.S. Navy in October 1943 at the age of 17. He traveled to Bangor, Maine, where he stayed a night, then to Newport, Rhode Island, where he received his uniform and gear. After eight weeks of training, he attended four weeks of Gunnery School in Norfolk, Virginia. He was then assigned to a ship at the Armed Guard Center in Brooklyn, New York. During World War II, Louis traveled to many ports and served in the Philippines as a firefighter and salvage deep-sea diver. He was honorably discharged at the Naval Headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts, after three years of service. Upon returning home, Louis found his family had moved to Skowhegan, where his father purchased a dairy farm. Louis worked on the farm for a few years and began attending Bethany Baptist Church, where he and his mother came to know the Lord on the same day. It was there that he met the love of his life, Nathalie Blanche Vaughn. They married on February 27, 1948, In Skowhegan and raised six children together. Louis often joked that he borrowed $25 from Nathalie to fix his car and figured if he married her, he wouldn't have to pay her back. Louis began his career at Thompson Manufacturing Company and later worked at Norwalk Shoe for 22 years. He also worked for his brother-in-law at Canaan Equipment selling farm machinery. During this time, Louis felt called to full-time ministry. After much prayer, he answered God's call and joined the mission Christ for the Lumberjack and Campground Haven of Rest in Athens, Maine, alongside Bill Gallant. He served as a deacon in his home church and preached in many small churches representing the mission. God eventually led Louis to a small group meeting in a storefront in Bingham, Maine. Together, they built Trinity Baptist Church in Moscow, Maine, which continues to thrive today. Louis retired in 1988 and spent winters in Florida with Nathalie, continuing to volunteer at a local church. He enjoyed carpentry, golfing, and spending time in his office reading and writing sermons to keep God's Word fresh in his mind. Louis was predeceased by his wife, Nathalie (May2015); sons Dennis Allen Turner (1973) and Mark Andrew Turner (2016); his parents, Glenwood Sr. and June Packard Turner; and siblings Charlene Soucier, Glenna Shelp, Maxine Gower, Glenwood Turner Jr., and Richard Turner. He is survived by his sister Marilyn Rich and brother Wayne Turner; children James and Tracy Turner, Larry and Sylvia Turner, Debbie Ledger, Carla Turner, and Becky and Dennis McKeen; 34 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren (with 3 more on the way); and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. A Celebration of Life will be held on January 30, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Crossroads Bible Church, 705 White School House Road, Madison, Maine, with a reception to follow.
