Skowhegan: Joyce Marie (Huff) Whitney, 87, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, June 1, 2023, at Cedar Ridge Nursing Facility after she fought a long battle with dementia. Joyce was born in Athens, Maine on February 1, 1936 and grew up in Central Maine living in various towns before moving to Boston, Massachusetts for a few years where she worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance and Time Magazine. On her off times, she spent her time with her special Aunt Marie at her island camp on Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire. Joyce met the love of her life, Bruce Whitney and they worked together running New England Soil Consultants
from their home in Anson, Maine for several decades. She also had the opportunity of working with Margaret Chase Smith as her personal secretary at her home/library in Skowhegan. Joyce enjoyed traveling all over the world with her friends and family. Her favorite trip was to Alaska where she caught the biggest King Salmon in the group. Needless to say, she loved fishing and spending time in nature. Other interests include genealogy, antiquing, painting, and dancing. She was a lifetime member of the Minerva Chapter of the Eastern Star in Madison, Maine. She also enjoyed caring for her neighbors in the area. She took pride in being able to drive them to the grocery store or out for a bite to eat. She was a very social person and was known to take daily trips to the grocery store just to talk to people. Joyce was predeceased by her mother Jennie Brown Huff and her father Vernal Huff and her husband Bruce Whitney. She was also predeceased by three siblings. She is survived by her daughters Michelle Judice and husband Al Judice; Renee Lloyd and husband Scott Lloyd; 5 grandchildren, Nick Judice, Al Judice, Alicia Romero, Sierra Clark and Whitney Lloyd; 8 great-grandchildren; 9 siblings and several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Cedar Ridge Nursing Facility/Hickory House for making her feel at home for the last couple of years.
A graveside burial will be held at Morses Corner Cemetery in Corinna, Maine on July 7, 2023 at 11:00 am. A Celebration of Life will be held on July 8, 2023, at noon at the family camp in Mayfield Township.
