Obituary

Joseph William Kenneally, 78, of China, Maine, formerly of Carver, Massachusetts, passed away on October 8, 2026, surrounded by his loving family, following a short but courageous battle with lung and brain cancer.

Born on October 5, 1948, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Joe was the son of the late William and Helen Kenneally. He spent much of his childhood growing up in Somerville, Massachusetts, alongside his brother, Tom, and sister, Judy.

A proud United States Marine Corps veteran, Joe voluntarily enlisted in the Marines, serving his country honorably during a four-year enlistment. He attained the rank of Corporal and served in Vietnam with the 225 Vikings of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing at Da Nang from January 6, 1969, through January 12, 1970. His military service also took him to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in North Carolina and Yuma, Arizona.

During his service in Vietnam, Joe demonstrated extraordinary courage under dangerous circumstances. On April 27, 1969, while serving with the First Platoon, Wing Contingency Company, Marine Aircraft Group 11, at Da Nang Air Base, Joe and three fellow Marines responded to an enemy attack near the base’s bomb storage area. Despite the danger of additional explosions, the Marines spent approximately three hours fighting fires and working to prevent further destruction. For his actions, Joe received a United States Marine Corps Certificate of Commendation, dated July 11, 1969, recognizing his courage, devotion to duty, and efforts to minimize damage during the attack. It was a remarkable example of the bravery and commitment that defined his service to his country.

Following his military service, Joe built a wonderful life centered around family, hard work, and the people he loved. He and his beloved wife, Kathleen, shared 52 years of marriage, building a lifetime of memories, adventures, and love together. They raised their family in Carver, Massachusetts, where Joe spent many years as a devoted husband and father.

Joe spent much of his professional career working as an elevator and boiler inspector for the United States Postal Service. After many years of dedicated service, he retired in his late fifties, beginning a new chapter filled with travel, adventure, and time with family.

Joe had a tremendous love for traveling and experiencing new places. Following retirement, he and Kathleen spent four unforgettable years exploring the United States in their RV. Their adventures took them throughout Florida, the Dakotas, Arizona, Texas, the Carolinas, and countless other destinations. Together, they embraced the freedom of the open road, creating memories and friendships along the way.

After their travels, Joe and Kathleen made Maine their home, spending much of their time in Waterville before eventually purchasing a home in China, Maine.

Joe was known for his wonderful sense of humor, generous spirit, and ability to bring a smile to those around him. He was simply a great guy who enjoyed life, loved his family, and made a lasting impression on the people who were fortunate enough to know him. You could always find Joe on his computer, watching the stock market and drinking his black coffee.

While Joe took great pride in being a Marine, a husband, and a father, perhaps no role brought him greater joy than being a grandfather.

Affectionately known as “Popeye,” Joe embraced being a grandfather with his whole heart. His nine grandchildren were among his greatest blessings, and he cherished every opportunity to spend time with them. Popeye’s love, humor, and presence made a lasting impact on each of their lives, creating memories they will carry with them forever.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Kathleen Kenneally; his four children, Kimberlee Kirby and her husband, Steve; Chris Fontaine; Patrick Kenneally and his wife, Stacey; and Erin Fihlman and her husband, Jason.

He leaves behind his nine beloved grandchildren: Jamie Taylor, Austin Fontaine, Eileen Sears, Connor Fihlman, Maddie Fihlman, Nolan Kenneally, Grace Kenneally, Kendall Fontaine, Brynn Fontaine and his two great-grandchildren Blake and Kinsley Taylor.

Joe is also survived by his sister-in-law, Jean Young, and her husband, Dick Young, with whom he shared a particularly close and cherished relationship, along with many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, William and Helen Kenneally; his siblings, Judy and Tom; and his older brother Billy, who sadly passed away at a very young age.

Above all else, Joe will be remembered as a man of strength, courage, generosity, and character.

Though he will be deeply missed, the impact Joe made on his family and everyone who knew him will live on for generations to come.

Rest easy, Joe/Dad/Popeye. We Love You. Semper Fi.

The family will hold a private service.
