Skowhegan - Jakub Prokop, 21, of Skowhegan, Maine, died in a boating accident on the Kennebec River on Saturday, July 4, 2026.
Jakub was born in Waterville on May 10, 2005, the middle child of Oto Prokop and Petra Prokopova. He graduated from Skowhegan Area High School in 2023 and was studying construction engineering technology at the University of Maine at the time of his death. Jakub dreamed of owning his own company and building homes in Maine using natural materials.
Jakub is survived by his parents, Oto Prokop and Petra Prokopova; his brother, Matush Prokop, and wife Hannah Prokopova; his sister, Kristina Prokopova; his girlfriend, Natalie Sites; his uncle David Prokop; his aunt Katarina Prokopova; cousins Tristan and Goran Prokop; his uncle Mikulas Prokop; his aunt Jana Prokopova; cousins Anna Prokopova and Peter Prokop; his uncle Ivo Majorosi; his uncle Stano Majorosi; his aunt Lenka Juchova; cousin Bianka Majorosiova; grandparents Mikulas Prokop and Danusa Prokopova; grandparents Bozena Majorosiova and Laco Majorosi; and his loving friends and extended family.
Jakub made the most of his short time. His greatest passions connected him to the natural world. He loved skiing, hiking, spending time on the water, and exploring new places. While away from school, he worked as a server, a night snowmaker at Sugarloaf, a roofer, a solar panel installer, and a whitewater rafting guide. He was effortlessly funny, creative, and deeply passionate about what he believed was right and wrong in the world. Jakub lived fully and intensely, always on the go. He was especially close with a small group of friends and his family, yet he had a way of making a friend of everyone he met.
A memorial gathering will be held at Sites Farm in Athens on Sunday, July 19, from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The family will arrive at Sites Farm following a private burial.
The family would like to thank the community for its tremendous outreach and love during this difficult time.
