Jacqueline Bess Smiley, of Embden and Skowhegan, died Monday, June 30, in Winter Park, Fla., at the age of 88. She was the daughter of the late Fred and Annie Gilbert Bess of Skowhegan. Jackie graduated from Skowhegan High School in 1943. After working as a telephone operator, she joined the Cadet Nurse Corp and trained at Sisters Hospital in Waterville. Upon graduating, she worked as a nurse and served in the Army Nurse Corp until early 1950. In 1953 she married David S. Smiley, of Skowhegan, and continued working as a nurse while raising their family as they moved around the country for his career. She retired in 1987 and spent summers at their camp on Embden Lake until this year. She was predeceased by her parents and 10 siblings, Charles, George, Linwood, Theresa, Arlene, Ruth, Ethel, Virginia, Edith Bess Fisher and Joyce Bess Arsenault. She is survived by her husband, David; children Margaret Reel, of Falls Church, Va., David Jr., of Orlando, Fla., Steven, of Odum, Ga., Carol, of Durham, N.C., and Lynn (Todd) Sadowski, of Orlando, and the apple of her eye, grandson Jacob Sadowski.
