Obituary

Skowhegan - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Irene Cumber, age 93, on May 1, 2026, at Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan, Maine. She was surrounded by the love of her family.

Irene was born on February 4, 1933, and grew up in the Dexter/Harmony area of Maine, the daughter of Arthur and Edie Levensailor. She was the eldest of four siblings: sisters Marion and Mona, and brother Stanley. She graduated from Harmony High School in 1951.

She took great pride in her career as a CNA, caring for others at Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan and later at Cedar Ridge Nursing Home, also in Skowhegan, until her retirement.

In July 1989, Irene married Rodney Cumber of Winthrop, Maine, who predeceased her. Together they shared 36 years.

Irene was a devoted mother to three children: Vicki Laney of Skowhegan; Brent Nichols of Belgrade (predeceased); and Robert Nichols with his wife Kelly of Skowhegan. She was also a loving stepmother to Lee Cumber of Winthrop; Guy Cumber with his wife Paula of Idaho; and Jay Cumber of Winthrop (predeceased). She later became a cherished grandmother to Karie Hardy with her husband John, Eric Nichols, Jill Nichols-Tremble, Holly Nichols with her husband Tommy, and Garrett Nichols with his partner Monica Brown, as well as step-grandchildren Nichole Sheets, Laura Cumber-Wheeler, Benjamin Cumber and Brady Cumber. She is also survived by 13 combined great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Her home was always filled with warmth and laughter, and she loved to bake and prepare homemade meals for the people she loved.

Irene had many hobbies. She loved working in her flower gardens and had a beautiful collection of plants and flowers around her home. She enjoyed traveling and camping, and she loved playing cards with friends. As a younger woman, she also enjoyed singing and playing the piano, and she sang at many weddings and church events.

While our hearts are heavy with grief, we find comfort in knowing that Irene’s spirit lives on in each of us. Her love was a gift that will continue to bless our lives, and her memory will be treasured forever.

A graveside service will be held on June 20th, 2026, at 11:00am, at Southside Cemetery in Skowhegan, Maine. It will be followed by a celebration of Irene’s life at 22 Swain Hill Road, Skowhegan, Maine.

A special thank you to the staff and residents at the Redington Memorial Home in Skowhegan, Maine, where Irene resided. The facilities, services, and family atmosphere were outstanding, and we cannot say enough good things about the home. She was extremely happy there.
