Obituary

Waterville – We are sad to announce the passing of our mother, Helen I. Murphy, 94. She passed away on July 26, 2023, at Northern Light Inland Hospital in Waterville. Helen was born in Waterville, Maine on July 10, 1929, the daughter of Freeman and Carolyn (Smith) Elkins. She grew up in Fairfield, Maine, then moved back to Waterville as a young woman. She attended schools in the Fairfield and Waterville areas. Helen lived independently right up until the time of her death. She was a meticulous housekeeper, was always nicely dressed, right down to painting her fingernails to match! She also had her hair done every week without fail throughout her life. She worked different jobs throughout her years, eventually retiring from MGMC from housekeeping. In her younger years, she was a member of the Waterville American Legion, Women's Auxiliary and enjoyed going out dancing with friends. She also spent many hours doing word search puzzles, which she enjoyed greatly. Helen was predeceased by her parents, Freeman and Carolyn Elkins, stepfather, William White, brother, Freeman Elkins Jr., sister, Ernestine Snyder, ex-husband, Thomas Murphy, her eldest son, Daniel, and two daughters that died at birth. Helen is survived by her son, David (Linda) Murphy, daughters; Sharon Nutting, Sandy Therriault, Laurie Murphy, and Kim Murphy, grandsons; Shane, Ryan (Jill), Michael (Heidi), Mark (Rachel), Tyrel (Jill), Zack (Meg), two granddaughters that were very special to her; Kiley Meader and Jessica Nutting, as well as several great grandchildren. Arrangements are under the care of Dan & Scott's Cremation and Funeral Services in Skowhegan, Maine. A Celebration of Life will be held, Saturday August 12th, from 1 pm – 3pm, at 26 Louise Avenue, Waterville, in the Community Room. Please come and share memories and light refreshments. If you have something purple or lavender, please wear it in honor of our mother, as this was her most favorite color. A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 18, 2023, at Maplewood Cemetery in Fairfield at 2:00 PM. The family would like to thank the Emergency Department and Special Care Unit staff at Northern Light Inland Hospital, as well as Beacon Hospice for the wonderful care of our mother.
