Gregory B Richards, 74, 01/25/1950 to 02/08/2024 of Winslow Maine passed away after a hard-fought battle against the complications that came from Juvenile Onset Diabetes before modern insulin was invented. Beginning in 1992 most of his appointments were prefaced by the doctors telling him how many months he had to live. Gregory was unwilling and too tenacious to accept those odds which was shown by the way he would work with the doctor's day after day and year after year.
Born on Long Island in NY to Gertrude O'Brien (Johansson) and Gerald Richards, where he battled many health problems as a child. Once his health conditions were under control the family moved to Rangely Maine and ran the Rangeley Region Sports Shop, as a true Family business.
Gregory attended Rangeley High School, Kents Hill, and graduated from Gould Academy. From there he attended Syracuse University, transferring shortly after to Thomas College graduating in 1973 with a bachelor's degree in business administration. While attending Thomas College he met his lifelong partner and wife Gisele (Fortin) Richards as well as continuing to help his mother at the Rangeley Sports shop.
Gregory was an avid outdoorsman who especially enjoyed fly fishing and bird hunting. Gregory's love of the outdoors was evident through his years as a fly fishing instructor on Rangeley Lake and as a ski instructor at Saddleback and Bolton Mountain. The West Kennebago area was his favorite place to be. He would escape there with family and friends to enjoy the quiet evenings and early mornings drinking coffee and enjoying nature.
Gregory and Gisele were married in September of 1974 and raised 2 children while living in Maine and Vermont. Gregory became a US Swim certified Stroke and Turn Judge allowing him to enjoy his daughters swim meets throughout their school years.
When not camping across Canada as a family or watching his girls swim Gregory worked in the financial planning and individual health care world. His tireless work for his clients allowed them to have the best health insurance plan to fit their financial and medical needs. Because of his own health problems Gregory was a tenacious advocate for his clients and understood the terminology and inner workings of the health care system.
Gregory was predeceased by Gerald Richards, Tania Richards Sicard, and Gertrude O'Brien. He is survived by his wife Gisele Richards, his daughter Lisa and Charles Byers and family and his son in love Joe and Christine Sicard and family.
In Lieu of flowers the family is asking for donations to the Sportsman Alliance of Maine (SAM) Youth Lifetime License Program at 205 Churchill Rd, Augusta ME 04330, 207-623-4589. Memorial information will be provided to friends and family at a later date.
