Obituary

Houlton – Erik E. Utheim, 79, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2023, at Northern Light Continuing Care – Lakewood, in Waterville, Maine. Born in Stavanger, Norway, Erik, and his family immigrated to New Jersey when he was 8 years old, where he lived until moving to Maine around 1980. Erik loved camping, the outdoors, bird watching, fly fishing, and collecting martial arts weapons, and firearms. He later moved to Vermont and began a very successful Norwegian Fjord horse importing and breeding farm. He was instrumental in helping to popularize this breed in the Northeast United States. Today his influence is apparent by the great numbers and popularity of the Fjord horse in America. Later he moved to South Carolina for a few years, though Maine was his true home and he returned there for the remainder of his life. Smyrna Mills and Houlton were his home for another 15 years, then ultimately, he became a resident at Lakewood Continuing Care. Erik was also a proud United States Army Veteran. He is predeceased by his mother Helene Utheim, his stepfather Jakob Utheim, his father Gustav Reymann, and his brother Jarl Hamborgnes. He is survived by his daughter Kristen McLaughlin with husband Tim, son Erik E Utheim with wife Karolyn, four grandchildren; Tyler Utheim, Kassidy Utheim, Kaileigh McLaughlin, and Mackenna McLaughlin, three sisters; Liv Kelly, Judith Bonn, and Heide-Rose Reymann, two brothers Gert Reymann and Manfred Reymann, as well as a niece and four nephews. Memorial services will be private.
