Obituary

Elvin F. Hawes, Jr., "Al," 87, of Moscow, Maine, passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2026, after a difficult battle with Alzheimer's and the loss of many cherished memories. He was born in Exeter, Maine, on August 17, 1938, the son of Elvin Hawes, Sr. and Maybelle (Rogers) Hawes. Al graduated from Corinna Union Academy in 1956. He worked hard throughout his life and built a career marked by dedication and versatility. He joined the National Guard in his youth and held several shorter-term positions with companies such as the Corinna Woolen Mill, Dexter Shoe, and Lord's Funeral Home before beginning a career of more than 35 years in the forest products industry. Over the years, he served as a woodsman, scaler, forestry manager, and log procurement administrator for the company that would, through mergers and name changes, be known as Scott Paper Company, S.D. Warren, Kimberly-Clark, SAPPI, and Plum Creek. He also served as a Deputy Sheriff for Somerset County. After retiring from Plum Creek, he continued his service to the community as a Court Officer at the Somerset County Superior Courthouse. He was deeply involved in his community and gave generously of his time in public service. Al was one of the founding members of the Bingham Ambulance Service, a member and eventually president of the SAD 13 school board, a selectman for the Town of Moscow for more than 45 years, and an active member of the Bingham Lions Club. Al loved meeting new people and could strike up a conversation with anyone. He was known for beginning with a few words about the weather and, fifteen minutes later, knowing much of a person's life story. He loved to laugh, loved to joke, and never seemed to be in too much of a hurry for a good conversation. A quick trip to the store often turned into an hour or more because of the visits he would have along the way. It was rare for him to go anywhere without seeing someone he knew and stopping for a chat. He took a special interest in his neighbors and fellow community members, remembering their connections to the people and places around him. He was received into St. Peter's Catholic Church on June 14, 2025, and attended Mass as long as he was able. He is survived by his wife of more than 65 years, Pearl (Brayson) Hawes; his children, Stephan Hawes and wife Tracie (Elerick) Hawes of Moscow, Maine, Leigh Hawes and wife Roxann (Carrow) Hawes of Skowhegan, Maine, and Cindy (Hawes) Carron and husband Eric Carron of Detroit, Maine; his grandchildren and step-grandchildren Denise Sprague, Rachel (Carrow) Otis and husband Trevor, Ariel Carron, Leah (Carron) Marcoux and husband Clay; great and step-great grandchildren Colton, Aydrianna, Erik, Bailey, Henry, Everly, and Addilyn; his sisters-in-law, Dorisanne Watson, Linda Delong and husband Darrell, Marie Fields and husband Paul, and Carol Brayson; his brothers-in-law, Michael Brayson, John Brayson, and Duane Brasslett; his aunts, Dorothy MacDonald and husband Jay, and Shirley Rogers; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; two infant children, Wayne and Coleen Hawes; his parents-in-law Michael and Florence (Morrisey) Brayson, uncles Sandy, Earl, Glen, Fred, and Stora Rogers; his aunts Paige Brown and Vivian Baker, his sister-in-law Charlene Brasslett, and brothers-in-law Robert Brayson, Jerry Brayson, and Dale Watson. The family wishes to express their sincerest gratitude to the staff at Redington Fairview General Hospital and Cedar Ridge Nursing Home for their professionalism in the face of adversity, and their generously compassionate care. And we will be forever grateful to Fr. Jim Nadeau for welcoming Al into the Church and hastening to his bedside in his final hours. But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. [Ephesians 2: 4-10] A graveside service is planned for Saturday, June 20th at 11:00am at the Union Cemetery on route 201 in Moscow. A light luncheon will follow at the Moscow Elementary School.
