It is with a heavy heart, yet with profound gratitude for her life, that we share the passing of our beloved mother, Donna Marie Newton, on April 3, 2024. Born in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, on June 28, 1945, Donna lived a life filled with love, compassion, and an unquenchable spirit that touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
Donna was a woman of many passions. She was a dedicated manager at Walmart before her retirement, but her true joy came from the simple pleasures of life. She found delight in coloring, arts, crafts, and playing games on her iPad. Her knack for collecting knick-knacks resulted in an impressive array of porcelain and other special collections. Her nimble fingers created beautiful knitting works, and her love for cooking in her younger years filled our home with mouthwatering aromas. Her gentle nature extended to rescuing a dog named Sugar, who became an inseparable companion until its passing. In Donna, we saw a woman who was humble, loving, and spirited. She was a free spirit who cherished family, forgiveness, and never held a grudge.
Her strength was truly inspiring. Despite battling lung cancer for eight years, she remained positive and her love for people never waned. Donna was also a woman of faith, attending the Norridgewock Baptist Church for many years. In her last months, she found joy in the serene surroundings of Vinalhaven, Maine, where she lived with me, her son, Mark. The ocean, the island, and the peacefulness of Vinalhaven were her solace.
She leaves behind a legacy of joy and love that will live on in her family, including her sons Mark and Jerry (Joy) Newton; daughters Yvonne (Eric) Rich and Yvette (Mark) Frazier; grandchildren Jacob Newton of Iowa, Brainna Newton of Arizona, Nicole Newton of Arizona, Clarissa Avila of Madison, Brooke Avila of Madison, Auburn Avila of Madison, Elle Rich of Madison, Chris Rich of Madison, Brittany (David) Brown of Skowhegan; great-grandchildren Devin Quimby, Jackson, Audrey, and Aiden. Donna also leaves behind her two best friends Donna Kein and Sandy Dodge, and her beloved Great Dane, Jake.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bryan Clukey, adoptive father, Clinton Sweetsir, adoptive mother, Olive Sweetsir, grandson Bryan Clukey, and her rescued dog, Sugar.
We would like to extend our special thanks to hospice workers Amanda Citotti and Alicia Small from the Hearts of Angels Hospice, who Donna adored. We are reassured in knowing that she is now free of pain and resting in eternal peace.
We invite all who knew Donna to leave memories and upload photos to her memorial page. May her life be a reminder to us all the importance of love, forgiveness, and the joy in cherishing the simple pleasures of life. Donna, you will forever be in our hearts.
