With heavy hearts, the family of Debbie Mathieu share the sad news of her sudden passing on April 21st, 2025.
Debbie was born in Skowhegan, Maine, on May 30th, 1955, the daughter of Lamont "Bud" and Mary (Labun) Dwelley. She attended school in Madison, where she lived for the duration of her life. As a talented cook and baker, Debbie worked for many years at her family's restaurant, The Oasis, in Madison before finishing her career at MaineGeneral Hospital in Waterville and Augusta. Her pies and breads were cherished by family and friends alike.
Debbie was a steady, grounding presence—caring, generous, and uniquely attuned to the needs of others, especially her family. With a big heart and a listening ear, she made people feel valued and truly seen. Whether offering a word of encouragement or simply showing up when it mattered most, Debbie had a way of making people feel deeply cared for—accepting them just as they were.
Her favorite place was her home and her beloved camp on Lake Wesserunsett. She was fiercely devoted to her family and found peace in the joys of simply being together. She also adored her dog, Bear—the two were inseparable. Wherever she went, Bear was never far behind.
Debbie is survived by her husband, Edward Mathieu; her children, Heath Cowan and Reva Mathieu; and her cherished grandchildren, Austin Kane, Ty Cowan, Reagan Cowan, and Lailah Sher. She was incredibly proud of all her children and grandchildren and their unique accomplishments.
Friends and family are invited to commemorate her life at a funeral service, which will be held on May 1st at 11 a.m. at Saint Sebastian Catholic Church in Madison, Maine. The family extends their heartfelt thanks for the thoughts, prayers, and support offered during this difficult time.
Debbie's memory will live on in the warmth she gave, the meals she shared, and the steadfast strength she carried throughout her life—a strength rooted in deep loyalty, conviction, and an unshakable sense of who she was and the true value of family.
