Dean M. Varney, of Palmyra, Maine, passed away on January 29, 2026, in Pittsfield, Maine, at the age of 61.
Born on April 22, 1964, in Maine, Dean spent his life rooted in the community he loved. He was known for his strong work ethic and passion for all things with wheels and engines. For 15 years, Dean served as a dedicated bus driver for RSU 19, safely transporting students and becoming a familiar face to many families in the area. Prior to that role, he owned and operated Palmyra Auto Sales out of his home. His lot often featured classic muscle cars—vehicles that reflected his deep appreciation for American automotive history and performance.
Dean's enthusiasm for vehicles extended beyond work. He had a lifelong love of riding Harley's and was often found exploring trails on his ATV or engaging in spirited wheeling and dealing. Whether it was restoring a car or negotiating a sale, Dean brought energy and excitement to every endeavor.
He is survived by his wife, Jackie Varney; his father, Millard Varney; his sister, Darlene Cray
with her husband Dean; his sister Diane White with her husband Pat; his step-daughter,
Alexandra Harding with her husband Dean and their sons. He also leaves behind his nephews, with whom he shared a very special bond, Jake Cray and Carey Abbott; his nieces Deanne Vail, Liz Cookson, Casie Sanborn and Heather Shaw, and nephew Nate Sanborn with all their families; as well as his cousin Cassie Melanson.
Dean was predeceased by his mother, Betty Varney, and his sister Denise Chamness.
A man who lived life on his own terms and followed his passions with determination, Dean will be remembered fondly by those who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to all who mourn his passing.
