Skowhegan - Daniel C. Nelson, 78, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 9th, 2024, surrounded by his family. Danny was born February 4, 1946, in Fairfield, Maine, son of Francis (Downs) and Frederick Nelson. He was a 1964 graduate of Lawrence High School. Danny enlisted in the U.S. Army in November of 1965, where he earned several medals and honors while proudly serving our country in both Hawaii and Vietnam. After returning from Vietnam, he worked for Sappi for 35 years. He was predeceased by his parents, sister Catherine, brother Nicholas, and son-in-law Herbert Gordon. Daniel is survived by his wife Mary, the love of his life for over 40 years; four daughters and their husbands, Melanie and Shawn Dowd, Tracey and Michael Atwood, Kelly Gordon, and Crystal Hodges; grandchildren, Mitchell and Brady Couturier, Tabitha and Jacob Clifford. Kristen Schmidt and her husband Caleb, and Kelsey McEwen and her husband Devon; great-grandchildren Benjamin and Bradley Schmidt, and the youngest, Olivia McEwen. He will also be greatly missed by his fur baby, Maggie. Please join us in celebrating his life on Sunday, June 23rd, 2024, at the Fairfield VFW (246 Main Street Fairfield, ME) from 12:00-2:00pm, with military honors being presented at 1:00pm. Please reserve the main parking lot for the disabled and elderly. Additional parking across the street at C&J Towing. Dan's relatives extend their gratitude to the dedicated personnel at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta and Beacon Hospice for their exceptional attentiveness and care.
