Madison – Claire H. (Roy) Carter Smith, 94, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2026. She was born on May 2, 1932, in Jackman, the daughter of Henri and Yvonne (LaPierre) Roy.

She attended school in Bingham and devoted many years to caring for older adults and others in need. She worked as a nurse’s aide at Thayer Hospital and also provided private-duty care. Claire was a devoted wife and mother and a faithful member of Moscow Baptist Church. Known for her generosity, she was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Claire is survived by her three children, Belinda Rainey, George Carter III, and Luke Carter; five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husbands, George Carter Jr. and Arnold C. Smith; her sisters, Betty Plamodon, Theresa Davis, and Helen Hartwell; and her son-in-law, Ron.

A funeral service will be held at Somerset Valley Remembrance Center, 19 Washburn Lane in Skowhegan, on Wednesday, September 30th, 2026, at 11:00am with a visitation beginning at 10:00am. Pastor Robert Philbrick of Clinton will officiate. Claire will be interred with her second husband, Arnold “Arnie” Smith, on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 143 Blue Star Avenue in Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, friends wishing to do so may make donations in Claire’s memory to a charity of their choice.
