Fairfield/Kingfield - Carolyn Mary Woodford Knapp, 80, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, passed away unexpectedly on August 10, 2025, at her home in Fairfield, Maine.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Carolyn was the youngest of fourteen children born to Laura Mary (Lewis) Woodford and Albert Michael Woodford, Sr. She spent her early years in Boston and Kingfield, graduating from Kingfield High School in 1962.
In October 1962, she married Norman L. Knapp, and together they built a life raising four children in Kingfield, later relocating to Fairfield in 2005 to be closer to their growing family.
Carolyn graduated at the top of her class from Una's Academy of Hairdressing & Beauty Culture in Skowhegan in 1965. She pursued a career in cosmetology, running her own business in Kingfield for three years. She served as a library aide at Kingfield Elementary School for seven school years during the 1980s. She volunteered extensively in her children's schools as well as in the community. She also supported her husband in the family automobile business, Knapp Bros. Inc.
Carolyn was predeceased by her parents and siblings: Michael, Gordon, John, Albert Jr., Norman Sr., Kenneth, Clifford, Donald, Thomas, George, Lorraine (Woodford), Marion (Gusson), and Patricia (Cushing). Her husband, Norman, passed away in 2020.
She will be remembered as a talented artist, accomplished baker, and devoted dog lover. Carolyn generously shared the vegetables and berries she grew in her garden with family and neighbors. She enjoyed watching and feeding wild birds and deer. She loved her role as Nana to her eleven grandchildren, who looked forward to her applesauce, yeast rolls, and cinnamon knots.
Carolyn is survived by her four children: Jennifer (Daniel) Bernier of Waterville, Amanda (Scott) Bressette of Oakland, Roger Knapp of Skowhegan, and James (Kathy) Knapp of Sanford; grandchildren: Kathryn (Jacob) Boudreau, Benjamin and Samuel Bernier, Gavin and Matthew Bressette, Barrett (Alyson), Abigail, Joshua, and Joseph Knapp, and Dawson and Parker Knapp; many nieces, nephews, friends, and her canine companion, Murphy.
