Skowhegan – Bertha Alice Irwin, 86, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2024, at home surrounded by her husband Richard, daughter Linda, and granddaughter Christa. Bertha was born on July 29, 1938, in Madison, daughter to Carlton and Dorothy (Creamer) Foster. She attended Madison and Skowhegan schools, graduating from Skowhegan High School in 1956. Bertha worked as a switchboard operator at R.F.G.H. for a time in her early years. She worked for many years at Hannaford (formerly Shop-N-Save), retiring in 1997. She had a passion for knitting and crocheting. She especially enjoyed making afghans and stuffed animals which she donated to the police and fire departments to give to those in need. She was predeceased by both her parents; brother, Robert Foster; and son-in-law, Douglas Annett. Bertha is survived by her husband of 67 years, Richard; sons, Richard Irwin, Jr. with his wife Sharon of Missouri, David Irwin with his wife Brenda of Florida, and Thomas Irwin with his wife Colleen of Florida; daughter Linda (Irwin) Annett of Skowhegan; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by "Mama's boy," Ludwig the cat. At Bertha's request there will be no services at this time. A Celebration of Life will be announced for the Spring. The family would like to thank the staff at R.F.G.H. and Beacon Hospice for the care they gave.
