Arthur A. Provost, 100, passed away April 6, 2015 at his home. He was the son of Alfred and Georgianna (Turcotte) Provost. He was born June 14, 1914 in Skowhegan. He took Lorena (Steward) Provost as his bride July 1, 1937. They have been married nearly 78 years. Arthur attended schools in Skowhegan. He then went to work for the American Woolen Company where he was a mule spinner for many years. In the early 1950’s, he set up machinery in mills in Old Town and Veazie. In 1953, he became superintendent of cemeteries in Skowhegan. He held that position for 31 years until his retirement in 1983. He was a member of the Federated Church for more than seventy years. He was a past member of the local Masonic lodge and member of the York Rite. He was a Boy Scout leader, having had his future son-in-law, John Hinkley, as one of his scouts. He was a life-long, dedicated Red Sox fan. One of his happiest moments was when he watched them win the World Series. He was a dedicated charter member of the Somerset Humane Society. His family remembers when, during the flood of 1987, he took litter and food to the shelter by way of Norridgewock, normally a short ride from their home. He and Lorena had fed the animals and cleaned their cages before anyone else could get there. Arthur enjoyed, more than anything, being with his family, including his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great, great-grandchildren at his camp at Lily Bay, Moosehead Lake. He loved to fish and spent much time in a boat with his sons- in-law and grandchildren. Arthur was a down- to- earth person who still used a rotary phone, never had a credit card or computer, had never been in an airplane, and didn’t believe in owing money to anyone. If he couldn’t pay cash for something, he went without. He was a no- nonsense person. Arthur was predeceased by his sisters Flora and husband, Warren Wheaton; Leona and husband, Charles Wood; Lucille Huard; and brothers Gerald Provost and wife, Violette; Albert Provost and wife, Mabel; Philip Provost and wife, Madeline; Alfred Provost and wife, Beatrice. He was also predeceased by a son-in-law, Roland Bossie. Arthur leaves behind his wife, Lorena, and daughters; Judith Bossie of Skowhegan, and Sue Hinkley and husband, John, of Augusta; grandchildren, Sharon Noel of Fairfield; Mark Bossie and wife, Rochelle, of Skowhegan; Steven Hinkley and wife, Abby, of Greenville; Derek Hinkley and wife, Patricia, of Indialantic, FL. He also leaves his great-grandchildren, Paul Bossie and wife, Melissa; Joshua Noel and wife, Nicole; Stephanie Hodgdon and husband, Charles; Skye Hinkley; Brian Noel; Ashley Noel; Coral Hinkley; Lauren Bossie; Keegan Gray; Law Gray; and Maddison Clukey, and great-great-grandchildren, Hunter Tibbetts; Paul Bossie, Jr.; Courtney Tibbetts; Kya Fidler; and Eli Wopat. He leaves his last surviving sibling, Orville Provost and wife, Monique, of Lewiston, many nieces and nephews and his beloved cats, Betsy and Molly. A graveside service will be held on Saturday May 30, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Southside Cemetery in Skowhegan. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, Maine.
