Obituary

Athens - With a heart as big as his humor, Allen John Cress, known fondly as "The Good Humor Man," passed away in his sleep on August 29, 2025. Born on October 17, 1945, in Greenfield, MA, Allen was a spirited man whose laughter was as infectious as his love was deep. He proudly served in the US Navy from 1964 to 1968. Retired from his life as a welder, Allen found joy in simple things. His heart lay with his family and the great outdoors. He was a skilled fabricator, but he was also a farmer, a fisherman, and a hunter, always happiest when he was out in nature or at home in Athens, Maine, surrounded by those he loved. Married to his beloved Sherry since July 2, 1980, Allen's family was the center of his world. His daughters Rebecca Burchill and her husband, Christy Bistrek and her husband Travis, and Lynn Benson and her husband Kurt, and his sons Dave Hay with his wife Penny and Gene Hay and his wife April, were his pride and joy. He was a doting grandfather to Emma Shea, Caitlin Bistrek, Meredith Bistrek, Kyle Taylor, Sydney Taylor, Austin Hay, Lauren Hay, and Molly Hay. And his great-granddaughter, Charlotte, brought a special twinkle to his eye. Allen was preceded in death by his father, Allen Cress, and his mother, Loretta (Volpe) Cress. However, his legacy continues through his wife, children, grandchildren, and so many others whose lives he touched with his witty charm. As we remember Allen, we invite you to share your memories and photos with us, to celebrate the life of a man who brought so much joy and love into our lives. Let us honor the Good Humor Man with good humor and remember him with love.
