Obituary

Madison Alice E. Ouellette (Gonya), 91, Madison, Maine, Thursday, October 12th, 2023, died peacefully in her home, with her loving family by her side. The sun broke through an overcast sky and bid farewell with a double rainbow. Alice was born in West Enfield, Maine on August 22nd, 1932, daughter of Mary (Haverlock) and Gilbert Eugene Gonya. She attended schools in West Enfield and Bangor, Maine, graduating as Salutatorian from John Bapst Memorial High School in 1949. Alice seemed most comfortable putting her secretarial skills to work from an early age, with employment at Means Wealth Management while still in high school. Upon moving to Connecticut, Alice worked at Day, Berry and Howard Law Firm in Hartford. Later, Alice returned to Maine and continued in that field while employed at Eames and Sterns Law Firm in Skowhegan. She then took a job closer to her home in Madison where she was the administrative assistant to the town manager for many years, eventually being elected to the Select Board after her retirement. After a well-earned break from all employment, Alice briefly returned to work for her former employer at the law office in Skowhegan before finally allowing herself to retire full-time. Witty to the end, Alice rarely passed up an opportunity to weigh in with a clever remark. She loved listening to a variety of music, especially musicals, and was known to join in the performance with her singing voice and even a harmonica. Alice also enjoyed expressing herself as an artist. The skills she learned at a young age growing up in the Great Depression allowed her to craft clothing for herself and her eight children, including costumes that would make Hollywood envious. Those close to Alice were also keenly aware of her prowess in the kitchen. Everyone knew that if a visit to or by Alice included food, they were in for a treat. From the best scratch-cooked comfort food to phenomenal pies of every flavor, to the platters of a seemingly infinite variety of Christmas cookies during the holidays, Alice's cooking was a tough standard to beat. And her generosity didn't end with crafts or food. No matter how little Alice had, she would always donate her time or money to help others when she could. She was predeceased by her father when she was five, then later her mother, her first husband John Handy Sr., her second husband Richard Beckwith Sr., her last husband Gerald Ouellette Sr., her sister Francis (Pam) Jones, and brother-in-law Norman Jones. She is survived by her eight children; Claudia (and husband Steven) Epstein of Boca Raton, FL, Diane Handy of Madison, ME, Dawna Soucy of Augusta, ME, John Handy of Norridgewock, ME, Joe (and wife Patti) Handy of Lebanon, CT, Nancy Beckwith-Walker of Lake Worth, FL, Chris (and wife Rachel) Beckwith of Hampden, ME, and Nick (and wife Angie) Beckwith of Tamuning, Guam. Alice is also survived by 10 grandchildren; Brad Handy, Emily Handy, Marissa Epstein, Zoë Walker, Zachary Walker, Caroline Beckwith, Charlotte Beckwith, Micah Beckwith, Isaiah Beckwith and Nehemiah Beckwith, as well as her brother, David (and wife Pat) Gonya of Venice, FL, her cousins Nancy Mercer of Naples, Fl, Richard LeVasseur of East Millinocket, ME, Rosemary Glidden of Howland, ME, and nieces and nephews Mickie Bickford, Barry Jones, David Gonya Jr., and Stephen Gonya. Alice also has four surviving stepchildren; Laura Swindler, Gerald Ouellette Jr, Walter Ouellette and Joyce Mayer. A celebration of Alice's life will be held in Madison with details being made available to family and friends at a later date.
